How To Write A Business Cover Letter

When you're writing your business cover letter, you'll want to look around for samples of cover letters so you can see what the best way to write a cover letter is.

Let's just say that I'm not going to use a template, though. This is how you would write a cover letter. First, I left-justify everything. At the top I put my name and address, with my E-Mail address and telephone number just below it.

Then, I put a line to the person I'm talking to. You should try and get an actual person's name, and you should verify that they still work there. You can generally do that just by looking on their internet site, finding their telephone number and calling. Just say to the person that you want to send a resume, and who should you send it to?

You can also say, "To Whom it May Concern,"

Next, you tab over to the right and type in the date way on the right. If it bumps down to the next line, delete one of the tabs. MS Word has an 'Insert Date' function. That way it will auto-update itself if you don't send it for a couple days, or if you re-use the cover letter form.

Let's say your' going to write a business cover letter that qualifies you for doing a customer service job. Look at samples, on-line, to give you ideas of what you should include in the cover letter¡­ but for customer service you should show that you have the necessary skills needed to do customer service. Create a proposal that they can't refuse. They need you as much as you need them, remember.

Your business cover letter should be short, but powerful.

You might type something like, "In my last job I used to have to deal with parents all the time. Because I taught kids, age K - 5, I would have to deal with, sometimes, irate parents. When they would confront me with their situation, I would defuse their problem by reminding them of their child's behavioral problems. They would agree that, "Yes, Johnie sometimes lies that he doesn't have homework. Yes, he sometimes pretends¡­" In this way, I shift the attack from an offensive to a defensive mode and the anger dissipates."

However, if you're looking for an entry-level position, you might wish to refer to things which show your character that aren't from a previous job experience (as you might not have a previous job experience).

In my case, I went cross-country by bicycle, twice. In order to go cross-country over 8800 miles, you certainly gain many life skills such as patience, endurance, tolerance, tenacity, etc. You can use such a life skill to illustrate how you handle yourself in difficult situations. Whenever I would write a business cover letter, I'd add such things like:

"I went cross-country by bicycle, and sometimes the weather would become severe. When that would occur, the only person who could do anything about the situation was me; so I'd have to take charge and handle such things. One time there was a raging wind, and the tent blew down in the middle of a vicious storm. I had to get outside and stake down the corners of the tarp multiple times."

This brings interest to your cover letter for resumes, shows that you can handle yourself in very tough situations, and is an adventure. They will go, "Boy, that guy sounds like he could handle this tough workload we have." And you'll be considered for an interview. Remember that the only purpose of the business cover letter is to get inside their door. Once you're inside, they will have probably forgotten you. If in the interview, however, you remind why they let you in, in the first place, then you'll gain the upper-hand again.
