How Do You Figure Out Your Best Attributes To Include In A Cover Letter?

When you're writing an employment cover letter, you've looked around for a good template you might use, you find samples of other people's cover letters that you think will work in your situation, and you've started sketching out some of your main strong attributes so you can build a strong cover letter.

Start listing your attributes.

I have strength of character, because¡
I have the ability to see things through to the end because¡

With each thing you type, end it with 'because¡'

Then, after you can't think of any more, get rid of the wimpy ones and start filling in exact samples of where you have done things that show those character strengths.

I have the ability to think quickly on my feet, because¡
I would be advantageous to your organization because¡

Next, in your attempt to create the best employment cover letter that will get you in the door, you should edit each of those lines to remove the word 'because. Rearrange the words in the sentence, sometimes putting the back-end at the front. This will add variety to your sentences. Try weaving two sentences that might work together with a semi-colon. When you use a semi-colon, make sure that both sides of that semi-colon are full sentences. A semi-colon connects two complete sentences that are linked with some relationship together.

Try and think of what that particular employer might need. You can get hints by looking at that company's mission statement. A mission statement is going to say what they're looking for. Use words that come directly from their mission statement, and build your strong sentences right from their very own words.

If their mission statement says, "Our company tries to improve the quality of health care in the world by managing our assets well."

Then you would create your list using those words:

I would help your company manage your assets by¡ being careful with the resources at hand.

I improved the quality of customer care in my last job by¡ being responsive to their needs.

Also, a good cover letter example that you find on the internet might help you think of things that you forgot. If you were to go to Google and type, "professional customer service example cover letter template", it probably would give you exactly the information you were looking for to finish your employment cover letter.

Remember that the purpose of a cover letter is to get inside their door. Until they have let you in, you're outside. Until you can get an interview (sometimes there are multiple interviews), you don't have a chance. There are few times that you'll get past the person at the front door without having sent them an interesting cover letter. Without having impressed them enough to let you in the door, you don't have a chance in Hell of getting inside. The time you take to create your employment cover letter, the better chance you'll have of getting your day in the sun. You might blow the interview; but you at least had a chance to try.

Not to say that you shouldn't try and get inside. Many jobs don't have such stringent ways of keeping people out. If you're a cabinetmaker, you'll oftentimes just be able to walk right into the back door. Once inside, and the guy says, "Yes, can I help you?" then you're in. If you go to McDonalds and you wish to work there, you can say, "Could I have an application?" and after they've given it to you, ask "Is there any way someone can see me today? I'd really like to work here."

However, if it's a bigger business, your best bet is to send them a powerful employment cover letter. Write one that will knock them off their seats.
